Casting, Manufacturing, and Comparison of Myo Electric and Multi Grip Hands

The evolution of prosthetic technology has transformed the way individuals with upper-limb loss interact with the world. Modern prosthetic hands combine anatomical knowledge, clinical expertise, mechanical engineering, electronics, and human–computer interaction to create devices that support functional movement and improve the user experience.

This two-day hands-on workshop is designed to introduce participants to the casting techniques, manufacturing processes, and technological differences between Myo-Electric Hands and Multi-Grip Hands. The workshop will provide a foundation in both theoretical concepts and practical applications, helping participants understand how prosthetic hands are designed, fabricated, controlled, and adapted to meet individual functional needs.

Through a combination of classroom learning, demonstrations, and practical activities, participants will explore the relationship between the human body and assistive technology, with particular emphasis on the upper-limb anatomy, prosthetic socket design, fabrication techniques, control systems, and functional hand movements.

Day 1 — Theory and Technological Understanding

The first day will focus on the theoretical foundations of prosthetic hand technology. Participants will explore:

• Upper-limb anatomy relevant to prosthetic design and control.
• Casting techniques and the importance of accurate anatomical assessment.
• Prosthetic socket design and manufacturing principles.
• Comparison of the mechanisms, control systems, functionality, and technological features of Myo-Electric and Multi-Grip Hands.
• The role of human–computer interaction in modern prosthetic technology.

Day 2 — Practical and Hands-On Learning

The second day will focus on practical application and hands-on activities. Participants will have the opportunity to develop their understanding through demonstrations and guided exercises related to:

• Casting and anatomical assessment techniques.
• Practical aspects of prosthetic manufacturing and fabrication.
• Components and assembly of prosthetic hand systems.
• Understanding and demonstrating prosthetic hand control.

Meet the Speaker — Usama Bin Yar

Usama Bin Yar is a UK-based clinical prosthetist with experience in prosthetic rehabilitation, assistive technology, and modern prosthetic systems. He currently works with the National Health Services - UK and is a member of the British Association of Prosthetics and Orthotics (BAPO) Editorial Committee, where he contributes to the professional prosthetics and orthotics community.

Usama will be the speaker and facilitator for this workshop. Through this session, participants will have the opportunity to engage with the workshop's subject matter through theoretical discussions, technical demonstrations, and practical learning activities.

The workshop will focus on developing participants' understanding of upper-limb prosthetic technology, from anatomical assessment and casting to manufacturing processes and the technological comparison of Myo-Electric and Multi-Grip Hands.

Participants are strongly encouraged to revise upper-limb anatomy before attending the workshop. A basic understanding of the bones, muscles, joints, and relevant anatomical landmarks of the upper limb will help participants better understand casting techniques, prosthetic socket design, muscle-signal control, and the practical content covered during the workshop. There will be a quiz at the end of workshop before certificate distribution.
